Decoding the Dress Code

Have you ever been invited to an event and had no idea how to dress? There many different dress attires and it can be hard to remember the rules for each one. To ease this pain here is a guide on what to wear for the occasion.

 

White Tie  

 

Women: Formal long evening gown, gloves (optional)

 

Men: Black suit, vest, black or white bow tie, black patent shoes, black dress sock

 

Black Tie

 

Women: Formal long evening gowns, cocktail dresses, little black dresses, nice top and long skirt

 

Men: Tuxedo, black patent shoes, black dress socks

 

*Black Tie Optional: Men can wear a suit with leather dress shoes and dark dress socks

*Creative Black Tie: Men and women can wear fun and trendy accessories

 

Semi-Formal

 

Women: cocktail dresses, little black dresses, nice top and skirt/pants

 

Men: Dark business suit, dress shirt, leather dress shoes, dark dress socks

 

Festive

 

Women: cocktail dresses, little black dresses, nice top and skirt/pants in holiday colors

 

Men: Sports coat or blazer with slacks, open-collar or dress shirt, holiday themed tie

 

Business Formal

 

Women: Suit, Business dress, dress with a jacket

 

Men: Sports coat or blazer with slacks or khakis, dress shirt, casual button-down shirt, open collar or polos, tie optional, loafers or loafer-style shoes, and socks

 

Dressy Casual/Smart Casual

 

Women: Dress, nice top and skirt/pants, nice jeans with dressy top

 

Men: Sports coat or blazer with slacks, dress shirt, casual button-down shirt, open collar or polos , tie optional

 

Casual

 

Women: Sundress, long or short skirt, khakis or nice jeans, shorts, plain t-shirts, polos, turtleneck, casual button-down blouse

 

Men: Khakis or nice jeans, Cargo/Bermuda shorts, plain t-shirts, polos, turtleneck, casual button-down, sweater, loafers, sneakers, sandals

 

P.S. Remember as a general rule it’s okay to overdress. It’s better than being underdress!
